Happy Mario Day!
Today, as the world celebrates Mar10 (Mario) Day, we're going to take a step back from featuring a historic competitive card, and instead take a quick look at some of the coolest Pokémon TCG promos to ever exist! As one of the coolest crossovers ever, these two "Mario Pikachu" promos cards were released in 2016 following the success of previous poncho-wearing Pikachu cards.
We saw quite a few cards featuring Pikachu dressed up as other Pokémon in the XY era; Magikarp & Gyarados, Lucario, Charizard, Rayquaza, and more... And while they were never printed in English unfortunately, these cards took the collectors scene by storm! (The price on most of these are insane now...) So much so, that you can find plushies of all sorts of dressed up Pikachus in the wild! You can find the full list of all poncho Pikachu cards here.
But no other Pikachu had ever worn any outfits outside of the realm of the Pokémon world, until Mario Pikachu jumped its way into our hearts! But what is Mario Pikachu without his handy brother, Luigi Pikachu?!
That's right, there are FOUR Mario x Pokémon cards out there! They were both release in collection-like boxes in October of 2016 (Japan). They featured the promos above, sleeves, and a deck box. Other poncho Pikahu collections even came with booster packs.
How much more jealous are you of Japan now? Because, I am and always have been! My son and I LOVE Mario, and these would be so incredibly cool to own. Even cooler had they have been given to us in the English market, but maybe its for the best. As things that are harder to obtain - are often more valuable and special.
